Nouf Aljowaysir collaborates with Artificial Intelligence to create generative designs and speculative futures while questioning their underlying structures from an ethical perspective. She explores deeply intimate topics with emerging machine learning techniques that uncover dominant narratives and biases embedded in our technologies. Her recent work invites viewers to engage and speak with an artificial character, challenging them to relinquish control and question the AI guiding their relationship.
Aljowaysir has served as an artist-in-residence at ThoughtWorks Arts 2020. Her projects have been exhibited in galleries and festivals in the US and Europe, including the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), SXSW 2019, NeurIPS Conference on Machine Learning for Creativity and Design, and others. Most notably, her project Alexa, Call Mom!, an IoT interactive experience where Alexa contacts the dead through the timeless tradition of Séance, premiered at Cannes XR Virtual as part of Tribeca Film Festival’s selected XR projects.
Aljowaysir will be developing Ana Min Mein (Where am I From?) an experimental film that constructs her genealogical journey, using two different voices, her personal voice and an AI' narrator'. As she tells her personal story, she teaches this synthetic character to unlearn harmful Western stereotypes derived from its training on biased datasets. The AI slowly discovers the nuances of her ancestors' specific identities and realizes how the colonial forces that shaped her family's life are still embedded in our world today.
